Gchat Ghost??

Normally, I love everything the gmail does. Their latest feature is a little annoying though.

My dear pal Malen, has decided to use gmail/gchat’s new feature “Invisible”. I understand the need for this, it’s nice to look at who is online without being bothered. Few people care if you have a “Busy” (or as Malen calls it, “DO NOT ENTER”) message up. But, I don’t like getting messages from invisible users. It constantly says they are offline, I have no way to know if they are there or not. I wish gchat would not allow you to message if you are invisible. Hide all you want, but I need to know if I am talking to you if you are there.

Hope they change Invisible or I’m going to get message from Offline Malen for a long time. For now I’m going to pretend he’s a gchat ghost and refuse to speak to him.

James Buchanan to Abraham Lincoln Quote

Since I drive by James Buchanan’s house (Wheatland) nearly every day, I’ve always had a great interest in Pennsylvania’s only president.

Sure, he’s often referred to as one of our worse presidents, as our rumored to be first gay president, but I found a great quote by him today.

While watching History Channel’s Presidents series, they attributed the following quote to James Buchanan while welcoming Abraham Lincoln to the office.

If you are as happy in entering the White House as I shall feel on returning to Wheatland, you are a happy man indeed.

I don’t think he liked being president much. I got to find some time to visit Wheatland.

Dexter (TV Show)

Well since The Wire ended I’ve been searching for another show that at least is in the same ball park of greatness that The Wire was. I think I’ve found one that’s close.

It’s not as good, yet, but my wife and I spent a good chunk of the Easter weekend watching the first season, and enjoyed every second of it.

I may pickup the books after I’m finished reading The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

Can’t wait to start Season 2!

Tomato and the WRT-54GL

From my previous post here, I recently decided to get a Linksys WRT54GL.

I purchased it from Newegg on a Monday night, and had it in my hands by Wednesday evening. (I love newegg) .

Right away I decided to install a custom firmware. After a little bit of reading I went with Tomato over DD-WRT or OpenWRT. My research concluded that the interface in Tomato was significantly better and the options were comparable.

I’m pretty happy with the whole situation. My internet connection has been significantly better. I use Remote Desktop a lot, and haven’t had it drop yet. My DLINK router dropped my connection every few minutes. I even had trouble with local network remote desktop. I always thought my problems were due to comcast and separately the wireless connection dropping. After a particular maddening incident, I was able to track some of the problems back to the router, so I did the upgrade.

All and all, I’m pretty happy. I did have one problem with Tomato. I setup port forwarding and couldn’t find the stupid save button all the way down on the bottom right. So I spent two days without RDP access because I thought I had setup everything correctly.

Tomato’s best feature has to be the bandwidth graphs, it’s a really neat feature.

I can’t say anything bad about DD-WRT or OpenWRT for I’ve never tried them but I can recommend you give Tomato a chance.
